HHS Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration Leverages tiag® Expertise in Clinical Informatics, Behavioral Health and Artificial Intelligence

RESTON, Va., September 6, 2017 – The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) within U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) possesses vast behavioral health information — but like many organizations, SAMHSA is challenged to get valuable resources into the hands of end users. To surmount these hurdles and accelerate rapid discovery, diagnosis and intervention, tiag® (The Informatics Applications Group, Inc.) has been tasked to deliver an intuitive interface that will improve health experiences and patient outcomes.

As prime contractor, tiag — together with its partner Booz Allen Hamilton Inc. — will customize and configure SAMHSA’s Behavioral Health Analytic, Scientific and Clinical Information Component (BASCIC). This system concept is an advanced information explorer and web service that allows individuals, providers and organizations to seek and receive contextual behavioral health information.

In this work, tiag will fuse its expertise and innovations in clinical informatics, behavioral health, advanced analytics and natural language processing (NLP) — a component of artificial intelligence (AI). Enlightening the public and enabling providers to deliver faster, less expensive treatments, this contextual dashboard will provide deeper insights for end users seeking health information, resources and relevant works produced by researchers and academia.

“We are honored in this opportunity to help SAMHSA eliminate barriers to access and enable end users to benefit by way of faster, more intuitive delivery of meaningful health information,” says tiag Chief Strategy Officer Umang Modi.

This project will simultaneously help SAMHSA achieve its objectives to expand outreach and increase organizational effectiveness. The three-year award leverages tiag’s achievements at the intersection of behavioral health and technology, and maximizes the expertise of tiag subject matter experts in clinical informatics, behavioral health, psychology, front-end web development, user experience design, business and technical analysis, program and project management, application development and testing, among other specialties.

As the official agency within HHS that leads public health efforts to advance our nation’s behavioral health, SAMHSA works to reduce the impact of substance abuse and mental illness on America’s communities. Previously, tiag worked with SAMHSA to consolidate more than 50 separate agency websites into a new SAMHSA.gov interface. This prior initiative involved tiag project management expertise and support services to manage the organization’s web resources more efficiently, while improving online content and enhancing customer experience.
