Defense Medical Logistics Standard Support (DMLSS) – Program Management Office
The DMLSS Program, co-sponsored by the Assistant Secretary of Defense (Health Affairs) and the Deputy Under Secretary of Defense (Logistics and Materiel Readiness), is a unique partnership engaging the wholesale medical logistics, medical information management, medical information technology, user communities, and the health care industry. The DMLSS – Program Management Office (PMO) and its supporting software development arm, the Joint Medical Logistics Functional Development Center, develops and supports the Enterprise Architecture for Defense Medical Logistics.
To integrate the Defense Medical Logistics (DML) Enterprise Architecture (EA) with higher‑level and ‘neighboring’ enterprise architectures including the Military Health System (MHS), Defense Logistics Agency (DLA), US Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM), Defense Finance & Accounting Service (DFAS) as well as each of the Services, and others.
In the initial stage, tiag provided services to monitor and interpret MHS, Department of Defense (DoD), and higher-level engineering/information architecture policies (systems acquisition, architecture, interoperability, and information assurance) to determine applicability to the DML enterprise. After the initial stage, tiag served as the technical lead in the development of the information architecture for the DML enterprise by providing support to the Defense Medical Logistics Proponent Committee-Integrated Project Team in the analysis and transformation of the DoD’s joint medical logistics enterprise.
As a result of tiag’s exceptional ability to scope a difficult problem, map out the solution and execute the plan, the Defense Medical Logistics enterprise architecture enjoys a maturity that enables decision-makers to make informed decisions with confidence in their outcomes.
DMLSS has achieved significant savings by implementing just-in-time practices and Prime Vendor support concepts, eliminating the need to maintain large inventories of pharmaceutical and medical/surgical items at the wholesale level and at military treatment facilities (MTFs). By providing price comparison tools and electronic commerce capabilities, DMLSS has enabled MTFs to select and order the best value item that meets their requirements.
In 2004, the DMLSS Program was a winner in the Excellence in Enterprise Architecture Award program sponsored by the E-Gov Institute. The DMLSS Program Manager stated that the award reflects the innovative thought and dedication of a team committed to transforming and deploying a medical logistics system that will continue to meet the needs of their clients in the 21st century.
